DESCRIPTION

The Mayor Frank G. Jackson Scholarship Program was created by the City of Cleveland in 2007 to provide scholarship funds to the following individuals:

  • City employees
  • Dependents of City employees
  • High school seniors graduating from the Cleveland Metropolitan School District
  • High school seniors in the Youth Development Program or involved with the City of Cleveland Department of Recreation.

REQUIREMENTS

(1) City employees – qualified applicants must:
• Plan to pursue or currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree on a full or part-time basis (part-time enrollment is for full-time city of Cleveland employees only) at an eligible, four-year, public or private, not-for-profit higher education institution approved for Federal financial aid.
• Be a graduating high school senior or a current undergraduate college student.
• Submit a school transcript, two letters of recommendation, and documentation of community service (click here to access the community service form).
• Demonstrate financial need and complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form.
• Write a 500-word essay and
• Complete the College Now online scholarship application.

(2) Children of City employees – qualified applicants must:
• Plan to attend or currently attend a four-year, public or private, not-for-profit higher education institution approved for Federal financial aid.
• Be a graduating high school senior or a current undergraduate college student.
• Earned a 2.5 GPA in high school or, if in college when applying for the scholarship.
• Submit a school transcript, two letters of recommendation, and documentation of community service (click here to access the community service form).
• Demonstrate financial need and complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form.
• Write a 500-word essay and
• Complete the College Now online scholarship application.

(3) High school seniors graduating from CMSD – qualified applicants must:
• Be a graduating senior from the Cleveland Metropolitan School District.
• Plan to attend a four-year, public or private, not-for-profit higher education institution approved for Federal financial aid.
• Earned a 2.5 GPA in high school.
• Submit a school transcript, two letters of recommendation, and documentation of community service (click here to access the community service form).
• Demonstrate financial need and complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form.
• Write a 500-word essay and
• Complete the College Now online scholarship application.

(4) High school seniors involved with City Recreation – qualified applicants must:
• Have either been employed by City Recreation while in high school and/or recommended for the scholarship by City Recreation.
• Plan to attend a four-year, public or private, not-for-profit higher education institution approved for Federal financial aid.
• Earned a 2.5 GPA in high school.
• Submit a school transcript, two letters of recommendation, and documentation of community service (click here to access the community service form).
• Demonstrate financial need and complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form.
• Write a 500-word essay and
• Complete the College Now online scholarship application.

2020/2021 Essay Prompt options:

  1. Why is voting important? If one of your friends didn’t understand the importance, how would you encourage them to vote?
  2. Local government is about building trust and social norms for the community, but voters can be uncertain of its role on key issues like education, economic opportunity, transportation, etc. Select a key issue important to you and describe what role local government should play on that issue to the community.

Selected scholarship recipients must be a full-time (minimum 12 credit hours each term) student at a four-year, public or private, not-for-profit higher education institution.

Scholarships are renewable for up to three additional years from the first awarded academic year. To be eligible for renewal of the scholarship, you must maintain a 2.5 cumulative GPA and full-time status.
