One of the key ingredients in this gumbo called life is confidence. You can have every other ingredient: good looks, height, money, talent, even intelligence, but without confidence, that gumbo won’t taste right. So what does confidence look like? It’s the difference between believing something and knowing something. The opposite of confidence then is insecurity or doubt.
So where do doubt and insecurities come from? Because we all have them.
Involved in the original sin, with our natural parents Adam and Eve, was doubt. The scene is set in the garden of Eden. And God gives Adam a divine directive not to eat fruit from one tree in the garden! The serpent, which was the devil, suggested that they could and should eat from that tree. Doubt set in and Eve, lead by her own desire, ate the fruit and then gave it to Adam and he also ate of the fruit. The Bible says that their eyes were opened and they covered themselves with fig leaves.
Now they were self aware and insecure. Notice, they hid from each other before hiding from God.
A lady at my job told me about a yellow dress she wore one time (I had asked if she wore dresses.) She was about 4’6”. She told me no. I asked why not? She told me about wearing a yellow dress & how everyone really liked the way she looked in her dress, except one guy. He told her she looked like a giant lemon. She said that was the last time she wore a dress. And that was years ago. Encouragingly, I reminded her that all but one thought she looked nice, and not to let one negative comment affect her that way. But her own insecurity would not let her believe the good reports, only the bad one. She lacked confidence.
They told David that he couldn’t fight Goliath. He was just a ruddy kid and Goliath was the champion of Gath; a 9’6” killing machine. But David, the shepherd boy, was confident that he would achieve victory for the Lord! How could he be so confident? When King Saul said that he could not go against Goliath, David said, “The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.” So when a lion and a bear tried to take a lamb from the flock, David, the shepherd, went and killed the lion and the bear to save his sheep. So his confidence was in the Lord.
Nothing we put our confidence in, such as our looks, our shape, our jobs, cars, homes, will last. Real confidence is knowing that all things work together for good to those who love God and are called according to His purpose. Rom. 8:28.
Well David defeated Goliath. Oh yea, the lady with the yellow dress, she wore a green one the very next day.
My confidence is in the Lord!
“In the fear of the LORD there is strong confidence, And His children will have a place of refuge.” Proverbs 14:26
